Kenjgewin Teg Forges Future Skilled Trades Leaders Through Innovative Welding Program

M’CHIGEENG FIRST NATION—Kenjgewin Teg has partnered with the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) Group to become an accredited testing centre, allowing students to learn the skills they need and complete their CWB certification at Kenjgewin Teg’s Anishinabek Skills, Innovation and Research Centre (ASIRC) on M’Chigeeng First Nation.

Kenjgewin Teg worked with the CWB Group to become an accredited testing center, which allows students to learn and become certified in welding procedures without leaving their home communities.

Kenjgewin Teg’s CWB Program is designed to give students hands-on learning, preparing them for welding tests conducted on-site by a CWB inspector. Kenjgewin Teg’s experienced instructor gives students the tools needed to get into the workforce and have a successful career in the welding field.

The smaller class sizes (limit of nine students) allow for one-on-one time with the instructor. The instructor works closely with each student, guiding them on their unique learning pathway, which ensures the best learning outcomes.

In 2022, Kenjgewin Teg held two successful cohorts of its CWB Program. The Spring 2022 Cohort had seven students enrolled, with six receiving an ‘All-Position’ Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) Certification. Two of the graduates of this cohort have started apprenticeships; one is a Carpenter Apprentice with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local 2486, and the second is a Construction Boilermaker Apprentice with the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Local 128.

The Fall 2022 Cohort had six students enrolled, all of which received certification also. A graduate of this cohort has become a Construction Boilermaker Apprentice with the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Local 128. Another nine students enrolled in the Spring 2023 Cohort.

Kenjgewin Teg’s next CWB Program cohort starts September 11, 2023, with applications due August 25, 2023. To learn more, please visit https://www.kenjgewinteg.ca/programs/trades-apprenticeships/canadian-welding-bureau-cwb-certification.
