Secondary School

Kenjgewin Teg Secondary School

Picture
Kenjgewin Teg offers a Ministry accredited and inspected private high school that exists to meet the needs of predominantly First Nation students who cannot, or choose not to, attend the local provincial secondary school.  Using a lower teacher-student ratio, an ongoing intake process, and a more individualized, career-oriented approach, committed students gain the skills and confidence to complete an Ontario Secondary School Diploma at Kenjgewin Teg, or reintegrate into the conventional public system.  Our focus  is to provide a caring, flexible and student-centered atmosphere in which students can be give a second change to find success.

September Registration

Continuous intake occurs throughout the school year
  • Early registration takes place the third week of August
  • Last possible date to register is May 1 (shortened learning term)

Full-Time Status
  • Students who are registered full-time are required to be in full-time attendance
  • An interview with the school counsellor will be arranged if a student is absent or is continually late; a plan of action is developed to remedy the problem
  • If a student requires an extended leave for a valid reason, special arrangements may be made

Part-Time Status
  • Part-time studies are available for students who are employed, or where child-care or other exceptional circumstances is evident
  • Students registered part-time submit completed assignments on a regularly monitored basis

Attendance
Students are expected to be present all day, every day. Attendance falling below 80% in any one month is considered unsatisfactory and may jeopardize their placement in the secondary school program.  Attendence is a priority due to the commitment and work it takes to obtain a secondary school diploma.

Cultural Development

Picture
Kenjgewin Teg is committed to providing a learning environment which enhances student physical, intellectual, spiritual and emotional development. Kenjgewin Teg accesses cultural mentors and elders for students to speak with regarding their personal cultural development. There are many opportunities for students to learn about their Anishinabek culture through guest speakers, craftspeople and community elders throughout the school year.

Course/Credits Delivery Methods
  1. Independent Learning Courses (ILC)
ILC courses are made up of four units of five lessons; there are twenty lessons in each full credit course. Typically, after finishing the readings and practice exercises, students complete assignments in their Course Journal or its electronic equivalent, the E- Journal. Each lesson contains support and key questions. All questions must be completed before submitting to the teacher for evaluation. Journals are marked by a teacher who provides written feedback and encouragement. Each course has a final examination. Students are given all the learning materials such as textbooks and audio tapes that they require to complete their course work. Students are expected to supply their own writing paper, pens, and pencils.
  2. On-line Keewaytinook Internet High School
Courses are set out by the Ontario Ministry of Education and are offered 100% on-line. Students enter the online courses and read the announcements, discussion area, assessment, and any other notes from the teacher. During September and October, students visit Mavis Beacon online and work on keyboarding techniques for 20 minutes daily. Students spend a few minutes organizing their day, making sure that work is completed in each subject area every day. The teacher mentor is available to help to edit work before submitting. Students must submit all of the week’s assignments every Friday afternoon.
  3. Teacher-Led Course Delivery
Each year, teachers in the highschool program select courses to be delivered via teacher-led instruction.  Courses are determined based on student need and requirements for their educational learning plan to graduate. The qualified secondary school teacher delivers the course outline, daily lesson plans and assessment and evaluation for these types of courses.

Outdoor Education Program
– A Partnership with Manitoulin Secondary School

Picture
Kenjgewin Teg has a partnership with the Rainbow District School Board which allows students to participate in the Outdoor Education Program. Kenjgewin Teg Secondary School and Manitoulin Secondary School offer a 4-credit program which allows students to participate in learning and practicing basic outdoor/survival skills with the opportunity to obtain certification for skill development.

Co-Operative Education
Cooperative education and work experience programs offer students another way of expanding their interests and exploring career options. Cooperative education is a planned learning experience in the community that complements and enhances school courses and provides students with opportunities to learn and to apply their skills and knowledge in practical situations. Courses in various disciplines are offered through the cooperative education program, which can benefit all students, whatever their postsecondary destination. Students receive credit based on evaluations of their performance in the work placement. Work experience can also be gained through short-term work placements (from one to four weeks) that complement classroom instruction in a given course, and are evaluated as part of the student’s work in that course.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) process is the formal evaluation and credit-granting process whereby students may obtain credits for prior learning. Students may have their knowledge and skills evaluated against the expectations outlined in provincial curriculum policy documents in order to earn credit towards the secondary school diploma. Through our partnership with Keewaytinook Internet High School, students may complete on-line, Prior Learning Assessment Credits for the purpose of granting up to 16 credits in the Grade 9 and 10 course credit requirements.

In all cases, students wishing to obtain PLAR credits/equivalency must:
  1. Be 18 years of age and out of school for a period of one-year
  2. Meet with our Secondary School Staff regarding the appropriate process
  3. Complete a KiHS Application for Mature Students PLAR Grade 9 & 10 Individual Assessement/Equivalency Process; or
  4. Complete a KiHS Application for Mature Students for PLAR Grade 11 & 12 Equivalency
  5. Have Kenjgewin Teg staff decide on the appropriate process based on individual needs
