SPRING 2015 TEACH-IN EVENT VIIIDate: Thursday May 14, 2015
Time: 7:30 pm - 11 pm Location: KTEI - 374 Hwy 551, M'Chigeeng First Nation, Manitoulin Island, ON Teach-in Leader: Isaac Murdoch Isaac Murdoch, whose Ojibway name is Manzinapkinegego’anaabe, is from the Fish Clan and is from Serpent River First Nation. Isaac grew up in the traditional setting of hunting, fishing and trapping. Many of these years were spent learning from Elders in the northern regions of Ontario. Isaac is well respected as a storyteller and traditional knowledge holder. For many years he has led various cultural camps and gatherings that focuses on the transfer of knowledge to youth. Synopsis: The following Ojibway legends will be told: • Ojiiganung (Big Dipper) The creation of seasons • Bgonegiizhik (Small Dipper) The origin of the Shaking Tent • Jiibiy Miikan (Milky Way) The legend of how the spirit world was made. • Zhowanung (South Star) The creation story for Pahiinsug (Little People) • Giwaydinung (North Star) How to find your way home 7:30—8:30: Outdoor campfire songs with Dave Southwood 8:30pm – Isaac Murdoch, Ojibwe Legends Bring your lawn chairs, blanket, bug repellant sweaters, water bottle, feast bag, and if you have a telescope, bring it. WINTER 2015 TEACH IN EVENT VIIDate: Tuesday, February 10, 2015
Time: 10 am - 3 pm Location: KTEI - 374 Hwy 551, M'Chigeeng First Nation, Manitoulin Island, ON Teach-in Leader: Joan Riggs Joan is a founding partner of Catalyst Research and Communications. For 27 years, she has worked with the non-profit sector and all levels of government to support their work in policy development, strategic planning, organizational development and in building partnerships and collaborations. Joan is a skilled lead facilitator and has facilitated many national, regional, provincial and organizational meetings and has worked extensively with urban Aboriginal organizations. Topic: The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) sets out the individual and collective rights of Indigenous peoples, as well as their rights to culture, identity, language, employment, health, education and other issues. It also emphasizes the rights of Indigenous peoples to maintain and strengthen their own institutions, cultures and traditions and to pursue their development in keeping with their own needs an aspirations.
