About the Program:
The Early Childhood Education Anishinaabemowin (ECEA) Program aims to support learners who wish to incorporate Anishinaabemowin into early childhood education. This program emphasizes Anishinabe-aadiziwin (worldview), Indigenous knowledge, perspectives, and teaching methods throughout its curriculum, while providing meaningful opportunities for language learning. The ECEA Program promotes student development in learning Anishinaabemowin, and field placements can take place in both rural and urban settings.

Future Careers
This program is designed to train individuals who aspire to work in early childhood Anishinaabemowin immersion settings. Graduates may work as:

  • Early Childhood Educators in Indigenous language programs

  • Anishinaabemowin Language Instructors for young children

  • Childcare or Program Coordinators with a focus on Indigenous culture and language

  • The ECEA program incorporates unique and responsive delivery methods, including both in-person and virtual learning.
  • Students will participate in three weekend on-site learning opportunities in M’Chigeeng, supported by Anishinaabemowin speakers in all classes.
  • The remainder of the learning will take place virtually during the evenings throughout the fall and winter semesters.
  • All classes will consistently be supported by Anishinaabemowin speakers, ensuring a rich learning experience.

Admission Requirements:
OSSD or equivalent, ENG 4C or ENG 4U OR Mature student (ACCUPLACER testing)

Placement Requirements:

  • Must have up-to-date immunizations.
    • Proof of freedom from communicable diseases; fit to work with young children.
    • Two-step TB (tuberculosis) test before first placement.
  • First Aid Certificate; specifically required prior to the second field placement.
  • Vulnerable Sector Check – Must submit a Vulnerable Sector criminal record check before field placements.
  • Field certifications are required in accordance with the requirements of the Child Care and Early Years Act in Ontario (Bill 18).
